quite. The Archangel Raphael." At D.J.'s shrug she explained, "He's the chief of the guardian angels."
"If you say so. I'm afraid I'm not up on my angel mythology."
"Raphael is hardly a myth, D.J."
"Whatever. You can just tell him to take you back wherever it is you go back to and leave me alone."
D.J. walked into the hallway, closing her apartment door behind her. When she turned around Josie stood in front of her. D.J. leaned back against the door with an exasperated sigh.
"You know I can't leave you, D.J. I can't get what I want until I help you learn what you need."
A glance at her watch made D.J. straighten and skirt around Josie. "We've had this argument already," she said, walking backward as she talked to the angel. "I have to pick up McCall and get to work, such as it is. I want you to stay here. I don't need you hovering over my head all day."
"But I'm supposed to"
"No buts. Just stay out of my way. I'll talk to you later."
D.J. turned around and almost bumped into her neighbor, Mrs. Stalwerg, who stared down the empty hallway toward D.J.'s apartment door with a puzzled expression on her face.
"Excuse me, Mrs. Stalwerg. I'm late for work."
The sound of the apartment door opening and closing made D.J. flinch. "Dammit, Josie," she mumbled. The angel had materialized in the hallway in front of D.J., but she couldn't return to the apartment in the same way. Oh, no. She had to use the door.
